ELECTROLYSIS
At SharpLooks MED SPA, our trained professionals use advanced techniques to deliver lasting results, even in the most delicate areas.
How Electrolysis Works?
Electrolysis is a procedure that a very fine needle is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle alongside of the hair shaft. A minute amount of current is then gently applied to destroy the hair follicle. This energy destroys the cells responsible for hair growth, preventing the follicle from producing new hair. Over time and with a series of treatments, hair growth is permanently eliminated in the treated area. Therefore, the regenerative ability of the hair follicle is permanently eliminated.

Can Hair Grow Back After Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is recognized by both the FDA and the American Medical Association as the only proven method of permanent hair removal. However, it’s important to understand that results aren’t immediate after just one session.
Some hairs may still appear after initial treatments, but with each successive session, the number of regrowing hairs decreases significantly. Once a follicle has been fully treated and no hair grows back for over three months, that follicle is permanently destroyed and will never produce hair again.
Is the Procedure Painful?
Electrolysis is generally well-tolerated, though some clients may feel a slight stinging or tingling sensation during treatment. To ensure comfort, topical numbing creams can be applied before the session, and for those who are extra sensitive, a local anesthetic option may be provided.
Best of all, once your treatment series is complete, there is no ongoing maintenance required — and no long-term side effects.
How Does Electrolysis Destroy the Follicle?
Unlike temporary methods that only remove the visible hair, electrolysis targets the hair follicle itself. A fine probe delivers energy into the follicle, cauterizing it so it can no longer produce new hair.
Since hair grows in cycles, not all follicles can be treated in a single session. Some are in a resting stage, called the telogen phase, where they are inactive and not visible on the skin’s surface. These follicles will grow hair later, which is why multiple sessions are necessary.
On average, most clients require 8–12 treatments for optimal, lasting results. With each session, more active follicles are destroyed, and over time, hair growth in the treated area is permanently eliminated.
How Does Electrolysis Compare to Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal works by using concentrated light to heat and damage hair follicles. While it can reduce hair growth, lasers are not precise enough to fully target each follicle. This means results are often temporary, with many follicles remaining active.
In some cases, laser treatments may cause hair to grow back finer and lighter, but regrowth is still common, and occasionally, lasers can even stimulate new hair growth.
Another limitation is that laser therapy isn’t suitable for everyone. Results are typically less effective for people with darker skin tones or those with blond, gray, or red hair. Electrolysis, on the other hand, works on all skin tones and all hair colors, making it a truly universal solution for permanent hair removal.
